Mechanics
Faye (Laufey) wakes in the Everywhen, an afterlife where "ruthless gods from across mythology vie for power," and finds that the plans she made to protect Kratos and Atreus are at risk.[1] Santa Monica says the design combines "the movement and fluidity of the Greek era with the Norse era's approach to world-building."[2]
Her signature weapon is the Serpent Bow, which has two aim states:[3]
- Full-aim (precision): longer draw distance. Hitting specific body points can slow enemies or stop their attacks, setting up melee follow-ups. You can charge and stack up to five arrows for a volley.
- Half-aim (hip-fire): a mobile stance that fires a close-range cluster of arrows.
She travels with two companions: Phranque (Jack Quaid), a cosmic cube who can launch enemies into the air, which sets up bow volleys, and Rue (Perlina Lau), an enchanted ribbon guarding a powerful sword.[2][3]
Analysis: half-press and full-press aim gives ranged combat two distinct roles, mobile pressure and committed precision, built around a melee core. That is a real change from Kratos' axe-first design and fits the stated "speed, control and relentlessness" identity.[1]
Tech
Sony hasn't announced performance modes or PS5 Pro enhancements for Laufey yet. Given that the 2018 game and Ragnarök both shipped on PC after their console launches,[1] watch for whether a PC version is announced and how quickly. That would be a platform-strategy signal, not a technical one.
Business
Laufey is a franchise-expansion bet. Cory Barlog said he wanted "an extension of this world where the characters you'll encounter are unexpected," and Sony has already confirmed that the next God of War will star Kratos and connect directly to Laufey.[4] Laufey keeps the brand active between Kratos games while broadening the cast, the same thing Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales did for Insomniac.
Editions: Standard, a Digital Deluxe Edition (Dark Alchemy gear set, mini artbook, soundtrack), a pre-order bonus (Last Wish armor, a Phranque cosmetic, a resource pack), and a limited $149.99 Collector Box (game sold separately) sold only through PlayStation Direct, with pre-orders from October 13, 2026.[3]
Player impact
- Do I need the earlier games? Sony says Laufey works "completely standalone" but recommends God of War (2018) and Ragnarök for full context. Both are on PS4, PS5 and PC.[1]
- Collector Box: collectibles only. It doesn't include the game, so budget accordingly.
- February crunch: it lands between Metro 2039 (Feb 4) and Fable (Feb 23).
Long-term outlook
If Faye lands well with players, Sony gets a proven second lead and room for multi-protagonist God of War games. A weaker reception would show how much of the franchise's appeal rests on Kratos himself. Either way, the next mainline game is already set up to follow directly from Laufey.[4]
Open questions
- Performance modes and PS5 Pro support.
- Length and structure: hub-based like Ragnarök or more linear?
- PC release timing.
