Mechanics

Metroid Ravenous is the next 2D Metroid. Samus is ambushed by unknown attackers and stranded on an unfamiliar moon, and has to escape "labyrinthine ruins" by hunting bosses and using her "newly awakened Metroid instincts to devour your foes."[1][2] The tagline, "It's eat or be eaten," sums up the design: you're pushed to play aggressively rather than cautiously.[2]

From the reveal trailer, Game Informer points to a dash that warps Samus through walls, the ability to run on water, the return of Metroid Dread's parry, and the signature energy siphon that drains an enemy until it dissolves.[3] Polygon notes that Samus's suit changes appearance through the trailer, possibly depending on what she absorbs; that's speculation for now.[4]

Our read: an energy drain is a health economy change. If draining refills health or energy, the game can afford tougher bosses and fewer save rooms, and keep the tension of Dread's pursuit-style encounters without the frustration.

Tech

Nintendo's store listing gives an estimated 20.2 GB file size, TV, tabletop and handheld play, Switch Online cloud saves, amiibo, linear-PCM surround, and HDR and 120 Hz output on compatible TVs.[1] Important nuance: 120 Hz output support is not the same as a 120fps mode. Nintendo hasn't announced frame-rate or resolution targets.[5] For scale, Metroid Dread on Switch was 4.2 GB and Metroid Prime 4: Beyond on Switch 2 is 27.6 GB.[5] A 20 GB 2D game suggests much richer assets than Dread.

Business

Nintendo hasn't credited a developer, but MercurySteam made Metroid Dread and Samus Returns, and outlets widely expect it is behind Ravenous.[4] We list the developer as unconfirmed.

Pricing and editions: $59.99 digital on the eShop.[2] A Special Edition bundles the physical game, a SteelBook and an exclusive Samus (Metroid Suit) amiibo; separate Samus and Chozo Statue amiibo launch the same day. The Chozo Statue figure is larger than standard size.[1][2]

Timing: Ravenous arrives less than two years after Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, which is fast for this series.[4] Strategy read: Nintendo is using its 2D Metroid line as a reliable, smaller-budget release in a quiet January window, and selling amiibo alongside it to add revenue per player.

Player impact

  • Platform: Switch 2 only; there's no Switch 1 version listed.[1]
  • Storage: 20.2 GB fits easily on the internal drive; no microSD Express card needed just for this.[1]
  • New to Metroid? Dread is the closest preparation for the controls and parry.
  • Collectors: the Special Edition amiibo is exclusive to that bundle; amiibo functions haven't been detailed yet.[1]

Long-term outlook

If Ravenous sells well, Nintendo has two steady Metroid lines on Switch 2 (Prime and 2D) on a shorter cadence than any previous generation. The energy-drain mechanic is the kind of system that can define a subseries. Watch whether Nintendo frames this as a new arc after Dread's story ended.

Open questions

  • Who exactly is developing it, and will Nintendo credit them before launch?
  • Does the drain refill health, missiles, or a separate meter?
  • Is there a 120fps mode, or only 120 Hz output?
  • Who are the five cloaked figures from the trailer?[3]
