Mechanics
Monster Hunter Outlanders is a "survival hunting action" game, developed by TiMi Studio Group under license from Capcom, and set on a new island, Aesoland.[2] It launched on October 29, 2026 with eight weapon types: Great Sword, Long Sword, Dual Blades, Hammer, Lance, Heavy Bowgun, Bow, and the newly added Charge Blade. You hunt in squads of up to four, with Buddies (the Palico plus two new companion types, Rutaco and Trillan) fighting alongside you. Launch content includes a new Elder Dragon, Ruger Aidal, and "Radiant" variants of monsters.[2]
More than hunting. Capcom says players take on "a wide variety of challenges, including hunting monsters and exploring the field alongside companions gathered from different regions," with controls optimized for mobile.[1] A guild campaign runs from October 29 to November 30.[2] Famitsu's review describes parties of four Adventurers with three broad roles, damage, control (debuffs) and support, and says you don't need top-rarity (SSR) Adventurers to progress. It also notes a heavy layer of event tasks and social-game systems.[11]
Adventurers are the gacha layer. Your own character, the Fated Adventurer, is fully customizable. Other Adventurers, preset characters who join your party, come from Standard and Featured Contracts, paid for with currency earned in quests or bought with real money.[6] Producer Dong Huang told Pocket Tactics the Fated Adventurer "will always remain relevant," and that new Adventurers will arrive with every major update.[7]
The weapon list will grow. Mainline Monster Hunter has 14 weapon types. Huang said the team plans to bring "all 14 iconic weapon types" over time, and the launch press release says more weapons are planned.[7][2] App Store reviewers are already asking for missing favorites such as the Switch Axe.[3]
Our read: this is not Monster Hunter Now. Niantic's game is a short-session, location-based spin-off. Outlanders is a full-scale hunting RPG with squads, field exploration and a character roster, closer to Genshin Impact's structure than to Pokรฉmon Go's. That makes it a much bigger, much more expensive bet on mobile players sitting down for long sessions.
Tech
Hardware bar. Garena's launch FAQ lists the recommended spec as an iPhone 13 Pro on iOS 17 with 6 GB of RAM, or on Android, a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 or Dimensity 9200 with 8 GB of RAM on Android 12. The minimum is an iPhone 8 Plus on iOS 15 with 3 GB, or a Snapdragon 835 or Dimensity 920 with 4 GB on Android 9.[4] The US App Store download is 3.6 GB and requires iOS 15 or later. Expect more data after install, as with most open-world mobile games.[3]
Heat. Garena's FAQ includes advice for when your phone overheats.[4] Famitsu played on an iPhone 16 and found it ran smoothly, but said the phone warmed up at high frame-rate and quality settings.[11] Our read: treat "minimum spec" as "it launches." For a game built around long hunts, a recommended-tier phone, lower graphics settings, or a cooling clip will matter more than usual.
Controllers. Controllers are supported for hunting, quests and exploration.[2] That matters for a series built on precise timing, and it's an accessibility win for players who find touch controls hard to use.
Accounts and devices. You can use one account on several devices, but not at the same time.[4] Garena runs Korea, Asia Pacific, Middle East and Africa, and Latin America servers. It doesn't allow server transfers or teaming up across servers.[4] Garena and Level Infinite accounts are separate, so friends in different publisher regions can't play together.[5]
Business
Why Capcom is doing this. Capcom says Monster Hunter has sold more than 131 million units as of June 30, 2026. It positions Outlanders as a way "to broaden recognition of its IPs and maximize the value of its content in the growing global mobile games market."[1] Monster Hunter is Capcom's second-biggest series, behind Resident Evil at 213 million, per PocketGamer.biz.[8]
Who gets the money. Tencent's TiMi Studio Group developed the game under license, and Capcom collaborates with the team on monster design.[1][2][7] Publishing is split by region. Tencent's Level Infinite handles the global release (the US App Store lists Level Infinite as developer and Proxima Beta as seller). Garena handles Southeast Asia, Korea, Hong Kong, Asia Pacific, the Middle East and Africa, and Latin America.[3][5] Neither company has disclosed how revenue is shared with Capcom.
What it charges. On the US App Store, Crimson Plume Coins cost $0.99 for 60, $4.99 for 300, $14.99 for 980, $19.99 for 1,280, $29.99 for 1,980 and $99.99 for 6,480. There's also a $4.99 subscription and bundles such as the $9.99 Pot of Harvests and $19.99 Pot of Festivities.[3] Our math: the top pack works out to about 1.5 cents per coin, compared with 1.65 cents for the smallest pack, a smaller bulk discount than many gacha games offer.
How the gacha works. Pocket Gamer reports that the gacha covers only preset Adventurers, not weapons, gear or Buddies. In the beta, pity (a guaranteed top-rarity pull) came at 50 pulls on the beginner banner, 90 on the standard banner and 120 on featured banners, with an SR guaranteed every 10 pulls.[6] Those are beta numbers, and the launch rates may differ. After the third closed beta, the team removed targeted Buddy pools, made featured SSR Buddies free and added more free rewards.[7]
Demand. PocketGamer.biz reported 5 million pre-registrations at the September 29 date announcement.[8] Igromania reported 15 million on October 27, a figure that includes sign-ups in China, where the game doesn't launch until 2027.[10][1] On October 30, the US App Store showed it at #1 in Action, rated 4.8 from about 1,000 ratings.[3]
The benchmark: Monster Hunter Now. AppMagic, via PocketGamer.biz, estimates Niantic's Monster Hunter Now made $336.9 million in app-store revenue over its first three years. Of that, $219.7 million came in year one, then $67.3 million (down 69%) and $49.9 million (down 26%). Japan accounts for 63% of lifetime revenue.[9] Capcom's other mobile spin-off, Monster Hunter Puzzles, made about $8.2 million.[8] Our read: the curve shows how front-loaded mobile Monster Hunter money is. Outlanders' first 90 days will decide most of its lifetime revenue, and the China launch in 2027 is a second chance at a first year.
Player impact
- Check your phone first. If you're below the recommended tier (iPhone 13 Pro, or a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 or Dimensity 9200 with 8 GB of RAM), expect to lower settings, and watch the heat.[4]
- Pick your region carefully. Garena and Level Infinite accounts don't connect, and Garena servers don't allow transfers or cross-server squads. Choose the server your friends use before you invest time.[4][5]
- You can skip the gacha and still hunt. Gear and weapons aren't in the gacha, and Famitsu says SSR Adventurers aren't required.[6][11] Some App Store reviewers still complain about monetization pressure, so set a spending limit before you start.[3]
- Use a controller if you have one. It's supported for hunts, quests and exploration.[2]
- Your weapon may not be here yet. Eight of the series' 14 types are in at launch. The rest are planned but not dated.[2][7]
- Parents: the US App Store rates it 16+, and it sells currency packs up to $99.99.[3] Turn on purchase approvals.
Long-term outlook
Launch month. The real test is retention after the novelty fades: whether event content and new Adventurers keep players coming back, and whether app-store revenue charts show Outlanders holding a top-grossing spot into December. GTA 6 on November 19 will compete for attention, though not on phones.
2027. Mainland China launches "from 2027 onwards."[1] With Tencent behind it, that could be bigger than the global launch, but no date or license news has been announced. Expect the remaining six weapon types to roll out over updates, along with new regions. The launch already added Grand Archipelago and Rotfall Abyss.[7]
For the industry. Our read: Japanese publishers are increasingly licensing their biggest series to Chinese mobile studios with open-world experience, rather than building those games themselves. If Outlanders holds up, expect more of these deals, and more console series showing up first as free-to-play mobile games in Asia.
