Mechanics

Phantom Blade Zero is a single-player action RPG from Beijing-based S-GAME, which bills it as "kungfupunk," a wuxia martial-arts fantasy mixed with darker, mechanical elements.[1] You play Soul, an assassin for an organization called the Order. He's framed for a murder and kept alive by an artificial heart, which gives him 66 days to live. That deadline frames the whole game.[13] S-GAME's CEO Soulframe Liang has said it "is neither a Soulslike game nor a traditional action game."[5]

Parry first, stamina-light. Normal attacks, dodges and parries cost no stamina. Holding block and using heavy attacks slowly drain a resource called Sha-Chi.[7] Eurogamer's shorthand, quoted in Kotaku's roundup, is "kinda like high-octane Sekiro": you dodge red-flagged attacks and parry blue ones.[6]

Weapons are the build system. There are 30 collectible, upgradable weapons, and you equip two at a time.[6] Push Square sorts them into one-handed, dual-wield and two-handed types, and says upgrade materials are fully refunded if you change your mind, so trying weapons out is cheap.[7] Game Informer says "every weapon is wholly unique, like picking up a new character in a fighting game."[6] Phantom Edges are limited-use special weapons that also open new paths through the map, which gives exploration a light Metroidvania feel.[7]

Forgiving by design. You don't lose anything when you die, enemies you've killed don't respawn, and bosses have checkpoints between phases.[7][6] There are three difficulty levels (Wayfarer, Pathbreaker and Hellwalker), and you can switch between them at any time. A post-game "66 Days" mode caps you at 66 deaths for players who want the pressure.[9]

Length. Reviewers put the main story at about 25 to 30 hours and full completion at about 40 to 50.[7][9]

Our read: S-GAME has taken the parts of FromSoftware games people love (readable boss patterns, parry timing) and dropped the parts that put many players off (corpse runs, respawning enemies, fixed difficulty). That lowers the barrier for the large group of players who bounced off Sekiro, and it's a big reason the review spread is so tight.

Tech

Engine. The game runs on Unreal Engine 5.[3][4] VGC, quoted by Kotaku, called it "one of the best looking Unreal Engine games."[6] S-GAME pushed the release from September 9 to October 29 to rework character models and environments, and specifically to keep the look intact "even without relying on ray tracing."[14]

PS5 and PS5 Pro. The PlayStation Store lists the game as PS5 Pro Enhanced, with DualSense haptics and adaptive triggers.[3] On a PS5 Pro, TechRadar describes Quality, Balanced and Performance modes. Balanced runs at about 40fps at a dynamic 4K with ray tracing, and Performance targets 60fps.[8] Push Square says the Pro's Performance mode holds 60fps most of the time but drops during some bosses.[7] On a base PS5, Output Lag's roundup says Performance mode is mostly 60fps, with drops in the rainy Pangzhen region and in some boss fights, and the graphics-focused mode struggles.[9]

PC. S-GAME's official minimum spec is an i7-8700K or Ryzen 5 3600 with a GTX 1660 6GB or RX 5500 XT 8GB and 16 GB of RAM, aiming for 1080p at 30fps with upscaling. The recommended spec is an i5-10600K or Ryzen 5 5600X with an RTX 3060 Ti or RX 6700 XT, aiming for 1440p at 60fps with upscaling. Ray tracing at 1080p/60 is listed for an RTX 5060, and path tracing at 4K/60 for an RTX 5080, both with upscaling. An SSD is required.[2] Output Lag's roundup reports shader compilation on first boot and about 100fps at 4K High with DLSS Quality on an RTX 4080.[9] The Steam version uses Denuvo anti-tamper DRM.[4]

Steam Deck: skip it for now. Output Lag's roundup reports under 30fps even at the lowest settings (23 to 27fps, with dips near 10) and only about 2 to 2.5 hours of battery.[9] TechRadar says PlayStation Portal streaming works fine.[8]

Accessibility. You can choose English or Chinese voice acting with subtitles. Subtitles come in normal or large sizes, but there's no extra-large option. Controls offer three presets but no full button remapping. Camera shake, motion blur and violence can each be turned off.[8] The PlayStation Store lists the PS5 version's accessibility features.[3] Our read: players who rely on captions should check the subtitle size early. The red/blue attack cues are visual, which helps players who can't hear audio tells, but players with color-vision deficiency should look for a colorblind option at launch, since no review we checked confirms one.

Business

Price. The Standard edition is $59.99 (£54.99) and the Digital Deluxe is $69.99 (£64.99).[5] The Deluxe adds two outfits, a digital artbook and the soundtrack, and pre-orders get the Treasure Basin accessory and the Legacy outfit.[1] That $59.99 lands three weeks before GTA 6's $79.99 standard edition. Insider Gaming says no physical edition is apparent, and the game isn't on Game Pass and has no demo.[5]

The exclusivity deal. Sony's small print in the December 2025 trailer reads: "PS5 console exclusive. Also available on PC. Not available on other consoles until at least 12 months after release date."[15] Some outlets have listed Xbox Series X|S as a platform. S-GAME's official site and the PlayStation Store list only PS5 and PC, and no Xbox version has been announced.[1][3]

Pre-launch sales (estimates). Alinea Analytics estimates 850,000 digital copies pre-sold on Steam and PS5, and $43 million in revenue. It puts 73.8% of copies on Steam and 26.2% on PS5, and says another 80,000+ sold after the review embargo lifted. Alinea also says about 62.5% of pre-launch copies were bought in China, Taiwan or Hong Kong (75.9% of Steam copies and about 24.9% of PS5 copies), and that sales on Tencent's WeGame would put the total "WELL past 1M."[10] These are third-party estimates, and S-GAME hasn't published sales figures. As GamesRadar+ reported, Alinea's Rhys Elliott added that it "won't hit the highs of Black Myth's insane sales."[11]

Budget and backers. In a 2024 interview reported by Twisted Voxel, S-GAME said it had spent about ¥200 million and expected to spend about as much again to finish. Twisted Voxel put that at roughly $55 million in total and also reported investment from Tencent and development and marketing support from Sony.[12] In January 2025, VGC reported, citing a consultant and two developers, that the project got substantial extra investment after Black Myth: Wukong's success. S-GAME hasn't confirmed that report.[16] S-GAME was founded in 2011, and Phantom Blade Zero is its second game after the free-to-play Phantom Blade: Executioners.[16]

Our read: the numbers point to a pattern that Black Myth: Wukong first showed. A Chinese studio can build a hit on a huge home PC audience and use a Sony console deal to reach Western players. If the roughly $55 million figure is right, the Steam and PS5 pre-sales alone, at Alinea's $43 million before platform fees, already recover a large share of the budget before launch.

Player impact

  • When to play. In the US, it unlocks Wednesday at 10 PM ET / 7 PM PT on both PS5 and PC. There's no early access.[5]
  • PS5 or PC? A PS5 Pro or a mid-range PC or better gives the smoothest experience. On a base PS5, stick to Performance mode and expect dips in Pangzhen and some bosses.[9] Skip the Steam Deck version until a patch arrives.[9]
  • Xbox owners: on consoles it's PS5 only for at least a year, and it isn't on Game Pass.[15][5] PC is the alternative.
  • Difficulty worries: you can change the difficulty at any time and you lose nothing when you die, so this is the most approachable game of its kind in years.[9][7]
  • Story expectations: IGN says the story "mostly plays it extremely safe,"[6] Push Square calls it "awful and sloppy,"[7] and several reviews call the English dub stiff.[9] If you want strong storytelling, play with Chinese voices and subtitles.[8]
  • Digital only. With no announced disc, it's another big release you can't resell. See our PlayStation discs explainer.

Long-term outlook

Launch week. Watch the Steam and PlayStation user reviews for performance complaints, any day-one patch notes, and whether S-GAME or Sony publish a sales milestone. The next likely data point is Alinea's post-launch follow-up.[10]

November. GTA 6 arrives November 19 and will dominate PS5 playtime. Phantom Blade Zero has about three weeks to build word of mouth, and the 25 to 30 hour campaign fits into that window.[7]

Late 2027 and beyond. The PS5 console exclusivity runs for "at least 12 months," so an Xbox or Switch 2 version can't arrive before late October 2027. Neither has been announced.[15] Our read: strong early sales make ports and DLC more likely, but that's speculation until S-GAME says otherwise.

The industry. If Phantom Blade Zero follows Black Myth: Wukong, which VGC reported sold over 20 million copies in its first month,[16] with even a fraction of that success, it strengthens the case for more Chinese single-player AAA games with Western console partners. It also shows that a $59.99 price can still work as other big games move to $70 and $80.

  • Will there be an Xbox or Switch 2 version after the 12-month PS5 window ends?
  • Will S-GAME add a full button remap, larger subtitles or more accessibility options after launch?
  • Is DLC or a sequel planned, and does the "66 Days" mode point to more post-game content?
