Cloud Gaming: The Future
Xbox Cloud, GeForce NOW, PlayStation streaming, and the economics of servers.
Cloud gaming's economics are now visible to players. Starting November 2026, Game Pass plans include capped monthly cloud hours (Ultimate 15, Premium 10, Essential 5), with extra hours sold separately. Microsoft says it expects the caps to affect 4% of subscribers and that "the cost of providing cloud gaming grows as more people use it." The same change lets players stream games they own without a Game Pass subscription by buying hours.[Xbox Wire]
Our read: metered cloud gaming is a sign of where the market is maturing, toward usage-based pricing and away from all-you-can-eat bundles.
