Mechanics

This is a buyer's and analyst's guide to what a console actually costs in late 2026, and why. For the games driving demand, see our GTA 6 breakdown and which console to play it on.

Every current PlayStation, Xbox Series and Switch 2 model costs more now than at launch. That isn't how console generations used to work, and it's the single biggest story in hardware this year. Here are current US list prices next to launch prices, all from the platform holders' own announcements:

ConsoleLaunch price (US)Price now (US)Change (our math)
PS5 (disc)$499.99 (Nov 2020)[6]$649.99 (since Apr 2, 2026)[1]+$150 (+30%)
PS5 Digital Edition$399.99 (Nov 2020)[6]$599.99[1]+$200 (+50%)
PS5 Pro$699.99 (Nov 2024)[8]$899.99[1]+$200 (+29%)
PlayStation Portal$199.99[9]$249.99[1]+$50 (+25%)
Xbox Series S (512GB)$299 (Nov 2020)[7]$499 (since Aug 1, 2026)[3]+$200 (+67%)
Xbox Series X (disc)$499 (Nov 2020)[7]$799[3]+$300 (+60%)
Xbox Series X Digitaln/a (added later)$749[3]n/a
Nintendo Switch 2$449.99 (June 2025)[4]$499.99 (since Sept 1, 2026)[4]+$50 (+11%)

Our math: the change column is simple subtraction and percentage against the US launch price, rounded. Xbox prices are shown as whole dollars, as TechSpot reported them. Today's PS5 models are the later Slim revisions, so this compares the price of "a PS5," not identical hardware.

How we got here, in order:

  • March 27, 2026: Sony announced increases effective April 2 for PS5, PS5 Digital, PS5 Pro and PlayStation Portal across the US, UK, Europe and Japan.[1]
  • May 7โ€“8, 2026: Nintendo announced that Switch 2 would go from $449.99 to $499.99 on September 1, citing "various changes in market conditions" over the "medium to long term." The original Switch was left unchanged.[4] In Japan, the price went from ยฅ49,980 to ยฅ59,980 on May 25.[5]
  • June 25, 2026: Microsoft announced worldwide increases effective August 1: +$100 on 512GB models and +$150 on 1TB models. It also discontinued the 2TB Series X.[2] TechSpot counted this as the third Xbox price hike in about 15 months.[3]

Tech

The cause is memory, and the platform holders say so directly. Microsoft's announcement is unusually blunt: "console storage and memory prices have increased by more than 2.5x and we expect another doubling by the fall of 2027." It adds that consoles, unlike phones or PCs, "are typically not sold at a profit, but instead for less than they cost to make."[2] Nintendo's guidance put roughly ยฅ100 billion (about $638 million) of pressure on its fiscal year from component and memory costs plus tariffs.[5]

Why consoles get hit harder than other devices. A console carries a fixed, large pool of fast RAM (16GB of GDDR6 on the original PS5[6]) plus an SSD, and it's sold at a thin or negative margin for years. When DRAM and NAND prices jump, a phone maker can shuffle its tiers. A console maker either absorbs the loss on every unit or raises the price. In 2026, all three raised prices.

The same pressure reaches the next generation. Rumor: leaker Kepler_L2, as relayed by Polygon on October 22, claims the RAM and NAND for PS6 alone currently cost over $680, and that its total bill of materials is "approximately $200 lower" than Project Helix's. Polygon infers a PS6 price around $1,000 from that.[17] None of this is confirmed by Sony. Reported: Fortune said on October 20 that Microsoft has internally projected Helix at $1,200 to $1,800 for a holiday 2028 launch, possibly lower if Microsoft subsidizes it.[15] Our Helix breakdown covers what is actually confirmed.

Our read: if Microsoft's own forecast of another doubling by fall 2027 is right, the cost problem gets worse just as both companies would normally lock in next-gen hardware. That is the strongest argument for later launches, not cheaper ones.

Business

September's US sales: PS5 rose, Xbox fell. Circana's September 2026 report, released October 22, showed total US spending of $4.756 billion (-1% year over year). Hardware spending was $362 million, up 12%.[11] In dollars, PS5 hardware was up 43%, Xbox Series down 2% and Switch 2 down 12%. In units, total hardware fell 3%: PS5 +22%, Switch 2 -14% and Xbox Series -27%. Circana analyst Mat Piscatella said Xbox console units hit an all-time September low. PS5 led both units and dollars, with Switch 2 second.[10] Marvel's Wolverine was the month's best-selling game.[11]

Reported: Bloomberg tied the PS5's rise to anticipation for GTA 6, and said the $900 PS5 Pro is sold out or in limited supply globally, while higher memory prices are squeezing margins.[12]

The year so far is much worse. Through August, Circana's data showed US hardware units down 25% for PlayStation (the lowest since 2013) and 33% for Xbox, according to Tom's Hardware. Piscatella called the US hardware market the most precarious since the early 1980s.[9] Year to date through September, hardware dollars are still down 9%.[11] Piscatella also reported that the average price paid for a new console in 2026 through August hit all-time US highs: $529 for Xbox (+26%) and $597 for PlayStation (+20%). "Price sensitivity is becoming a real problem," he said.[13]

Microsoft is now chasing idle consoles. Microsoft recently emailed owners who hadn't played in a while, suggesting they "trade in your console to Best Buy for up to $375 back." TechSpot notes that the $375 requires excellent condition, and that a poor-condition trade gets about $150.[13] That fits the "previously played consoles" program Microsoft announced alongside the August hike: trade-ins at retail partners, resold at lower prices.[2]

Nintendo is taking the volume hit openly. Its forecast for the year to March 2027 is 16.5 million Switch 2 units, down from 19.86 million the year before. Analyst Serkan Toto told CNBC that "console sales usually go up in the second year โ€” and not down."[5] September's -14% unit result is consistent with that forecast.[10]

Analysis: September doesn't show demand recovering. It shows demand concentrating. One platform with the year's biggest release coming (PS5) gained, and the others shrank. Higher prices are lifting dollars per unit while total units fall.

Player impact

If you're buying this holiday, the cheapest route is refurbished, not new.

  • PlayStation: as of October 23, a Certified Refurbished PS5 Digital Edition is $499 at PS Direct and the disc model is $549. A current bundle adds a refurbished DualSense for $20 more ($518 total). GamesRadar prices the same setup new at about $673.[14] Our math: that's $155 saved, about 23%.
  • Xbox: Microsoft sells Certified Refurbished consoles at up to $100 off MSRP. It also offers buy-now-pay-later and 0% APR financing for up to 12 months through partners.[2] TechSpot reports a refurbished Series X at about $650.[13]
  • PS5 Pro: scarce. Tom's Hardware found refurbished units at $1,399 at GameStop in October, far above the $899.99 list price.[9] Paying a large premium over list for a Pro right now is hard to justify. See our GTA 6 console explainer for what the Pro is (and isn't) confirmed to add.
  • Switch 2: $499.99 since September 1. Nintendo hasn't announced a cut.[4]

Should you wait for Black Friday? No official Black Friday console prices had been announced as of October 23. Our read: deep discounts are unlikely for hardware that is selling at or below cost, and supply-constrained models like the PS5 Pro are the least likely to drop. A modest bundle or accessory deal is the realistic best case.

If you already own a console, it's worth more than it used to be. Microsoft's trade-in pitch (up to $375 at Best Buy, in excellent condition) works both ways. The resale market is supporting prices, so holding your current hardware is a reasonable plan while next-gen pricing is unclear.[13]

Long-term outlook

Next gen: later, pricier, or both. Sony CEO Hiroki Totoki told the Wall Street Journal in August that Sony has "not yet decided on at what timing we will launch the new console, or at what prices," and will "observe and follow the situation." Digital Foundry also cited Ampere Analysis estimates that a four-figure PS6 or Helix price could cut first-five-year sales by 38% compared with the PS5/Series X generation. Ampere suggested waiting until 2029, along with form-factor innovation.[16] Polygon reports Sony is now looking at 2028 or 2029.[17]

A pricing ladder is forming. Ars Technica notes that the Steam Machine broke the $1,000 starting price this year, the two-year-old PS5 Pro is $900, and the six-year-old Series X starts at $750.[15] (See our Steam Machine breakdown.) Our read: a $1,000 next-gen console would land just above a $900 Pro rather than double a $499 console. That makes it easier to sell to enthusiasts, but it doesn't help the mass market Ampere is worried about.

Three scenarios to watch (our analysis):

  1. Long current generation. PS5 and Series X|S carry on into 2028โ€“2029, with GTA 6 and refurbished supply keeping the installed base active. This is the most likely path if memory costs keep rising.
  2. Premium next gen with subsidies. A four-figure list price offset by financing, trade-in programs and subscription bundles. Microsoft's June programs already preview this.[2]
  3. Price relief. Memory costs fall faster than Microsoft forecasts, and some of the 2026 hikes are reversed. Nothing any platform holder has said points that way yet.

Date to watch: GTA 6 launches on November 19. Holiday hardware sales after that will be the clearest test yet of demand at these prices.

Open questions

  • Will Sony or Microsoft cut prices or offer bundles for GTA 6 and the holidays, or will they treat the game as enough of a sales driver at current prices?
  • Is the PS5 Pro shortage deliberate supply management, or a memory allocation problem? Bloomberg reports scarcity, but Sony hasn't explained it.[12]
  • Does Microsoft's forecast of another memory price doubling by fall 2027 mean another Xbox price increase next year?[2]
  • Can Switch 2 recover in its second holiday at $499.99, or does Nintendo's lower forecast already account for that?[5]
  • Do the PS6 bill-of-materials rumors hold up? They are unverified leaks, and Sony says it hasn't set a price.[16][17]
