Mechanics

Microsoft reports results for its first quarter of fiscal 2027 after the US market closes on Wednesday, October 28, 2026. The webcast starts at 2:30 p.m. Pacific (5:30 p.m. Eastern).[1] CEO Satya Nadella and CFO Amy Hood host the call.[2] Microsoft's fiscal year starts in July, so this quarter covers July 1 to September 30, 2026. That matters for Xbox, because the big fall releases came after it closed (more on that below).

This page is a preview, not a prediction of Microsoft's numbers. We stick to what Microsoft has disclosed and guided, and we label our own math. We don't quote Wall Street consensus figures because we couldn't verify them from a primary source.

How Xbox shows up in Microsoft's results. Microsoft doesn't publish Xbox profit. It reports two Xbox revenue numbers as year-over-year growth rates: Xbox content and services and Xbox hardware. Content and services covers first- and third-party content, Game Pass and other subscriptions, Xbox Cloud Gaming, advertising and other cloud services.[3]

New segments start this quarter. In September, Microsoft filed restated figures for a new reporting structure for FY27 with two new segments, "Agents and Infra" and "Devices and Consumer." Xbox now sits in Devices and Consumer with Windows and advertising. Microsoft says the XBOX revenue definition itself is unchanged, and it restated quarterly XBOX revenue for the last two years so comparisons still line up.[3]

Quarter (Microsoft fiscal)FY25 Xbox revenueFY26 Xbox revenueChange (our math)
Q1 (Jul to Sep)$5,621M$5,508M-2.0%
Q2 (Oct to Dec)$6,581M$5,958M-9.5%
Q3 (Jan to Mar)$5,721M$5,341M-6.6%
Q4 (Apr to Jun)$5,532M$4,983M-9.9%
Full year$23,455M$21,790M-7.1%

Figures are Microsoft's restated XBOX revenue from its September 2026 filing.[3] The year-ago quarter, $5,508 million, is the bar on October 28. Back then, Xbox content and services grew 1%.[5]

Tech

Earnings calls aren't tech events, but three platform changes from this year feed directly into the numbers. They're also where we expect analysts' questions to go.

  • Metered cloud gaming. From November 2026, Game Pass plans include capped monthly cloud hours: 15 on Ultimate, 10 on Premium and 5 on Essential. Microsoft says the caps will affect about 4% of subscribers and that "the cost of providing cloud gaming grows as more people use it."[12] Extra hours come as Cloud Playtime packs at introductory prices of $3.99 for 10 hours, $7.99 for 25 and $11.99 for 50. Xbox Insiders can test them now, and a broader rollout comes in November.[13] Our read: none of that lands in the September quarter, but any comment on cloud costs or Playtime uptake shows whether cloud is moving from a cost center to a revenue line. See our cloud hours breakdown.
  • Xbox on PC and Play Anywhere. Gears of War: E-Day launched October 6 on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC and Steam, and day one on Game Pass.[11] First-party games now ship broadly across PC and other platforms. That revenue counts in content and services whatever the device, which is why the hardware line now says less about the business than it used to.
  • Project Helix. Microsoft has said its next console plays both Xbox console and PC games, and it hasn't announced a date or price. Fortune reported on October 20 that Helix is planned for holiday 2028, after an Xbox handheld in holiday 2027, with an internal cost projection of $1,200 to $1,800. Microsoft hasn't confirmed that.[16] Earnings calls rarely cover unannounced hardware, so our read is that silence on Helix wouldn't be news. A hint about timing, or about subsidizing its price, would be. Full context in our Helix breakdown.

Business

What Microsoft guided. On July 29, Microsoft said it expects Xbox content and services revenue to "decline in mid-single digits" in the September quarter, and Xbox hardware revenue to decline year over year. In its September segment filing, it said there was "no change to outlook" for XBOX revenue.[3] VGChartz reads "mid-single digits" as roughly -4% to -6%.[7] Our math, for scale only: 1% of last year's $5,508 million quarter is about $55 million. A 5% fall across all Xbox revenue would land around $5.2 billion. Microsoft doesn't split content from hardware in dollars, so treat that as illustration, not a forecast.

Why the comparison is hard. In the June quarter, Xbox content and services fell 10%, against a year-ago quarter that Microsoft said "benefited from strong first-party content performance." Hardware fell 13%.[6][7] Microsoft's results were also partly hit by "severance expense and impairment charges in XBOX."[4] For FY26 overall, Xbox revenue fell about $1.7 billion. Content and services fell 5%, cushioned by Game Pass growth, and hardware fell 29%, according to Zacks' summary of Microsoft's filings.[20] Xbox's $4.98 billion was about 5.5% of Microsoft's $90.0 billion in Q4 revenue (our math from[4]), so it barely moves the stock. The numbers still matter because they test whether the reset strategy is working.

The July reset, in Microsoft's words. On July 6, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma announced about 3,200 role reductions through FY27, about 1,600 of them on day one. Compulsion Games and Double Fine became independent, Ninja Theory and Undead Labs moved to new ownership, and Arkane went into French works-council consultation. Sharma said Xbox had "margins that are 3-10x lower than comparable platform and publishing businesses" and that "in a typical year, we lost 64 cents for every dollar we invested." She also said platform teams were "40% larger than they were at the start of this generation," that management layers would be cut from as many as 14 to no more than 5, and that vendor spend would be cut by 50%.[8] On the July call, Nadella said Microsoft expects "to return the business to growth in fiscal 2027."[6] Sharma said she expects growth "by the end of FY27."[7]

Pricing moved in both directions. In April, Game Pass Ultimate dropped from $29.99 to $22.99 a month and PC Game Pass from $16.49 to $13.99. At the same time, Microsoft took future Call of Duty games out of Game Pass at launch; they now join "during the following holiday season (about a year later)."[9] Console prices went up: Xbox raised US console prices again from August 1.[14] Our read: a lower Ultimate price cuts revenue per subscriber unless it brings in more subscribers. Higher console prices protect hardware margins at the cost of units. Circana's September US data showed Xbox Series units down 27% year over year, an all-time September low.[15]

The calendar works against Q1 and for Q2. Gears of War: E-Day launched October 6[11] and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 on October 23, as a standalone release outside Game Pass.[10][9] Both fall in the December quarter, not the one being reported. Our read: the outlook Microsoft gives for October to December may matter more than the September numbers. It's the first quarter where a new Call of Duty sells only at full price instead of going into Game Pass, and GTA 6 (November 19) competes for the same holiday budgets. See our GTA 6 breakdown.

Player impact

  • Earnings don't change your games or prices on the day. Price changes are announced through Xbox Wire, not on earnings calls. But weak results, or a cut forecast, raise the odds of more cost moves later. That could mean pricing, Game Pass tiers or studio changes.
  • Game Pass could get more flexible, or more fragmented. Fortune reported Microsoft is weighing an "a la carte" Game Pass where players pick features. That's reported, not announced.[16][19] Today's US tiers are Ultimate at about $23 a month, Premium $15, Essential $10 and PC Game Pass $14.[19] If management talks about "choice" or "flexibility" on the call, read that as a hint about this.
  • Cloud players: November is the real test. Hour caps and Playtime packs start in November, so the October 28 call can only give intentions, not results.[12][13]
  • Studios and games. Arkane Lyon's consultation was extended by a month past November 13 while Microsoft looks for a partner to support Marvel's Blade. Microsoft says closure documents "do not represent a final decision."[18] Polygon reports more layoffs are expected.[17] Our read: watch for any comment on further restructuring charges. They usually signal more studio changes.
  • Thinking about buying an Xbox Series console? Prices rose on August 1.[14] Nothing on the call is likely to change that before the holidays. Our 2026 console prices breakdown compares every model.

Long-term outlook

The growth promise is the scorecard. Sharma wrote in July that "we will return to growth in 2027,"[8] and Nadella put it as fiscal 2027, which ends June 30, 2027.[6] Its own Q1 guide is still a decline,[3] so any FY27 growth would have to come late in the year. Year-ago comparisons do get easier: FY26's Q3 and Q4 were down 6.6% and 9.9% (our math from[3]).

Three paths to watch (our analysis):

  1. Reset on track. Content and services lands near guidance, management repeats the FY27 growth target, and the December-quarter outlook shows Gears and Call of Duty adding to revenue. That would back the strategy of fewer studios, cheaper Game Pass, Call of Duty sold separately and metered cloud.
  2. Soft guide. The Q2 outlook disappoints, perhaps because of console unit declines and GTA 6 competition, and the growth language softens to "the end of FY27" or later. Expect more cost cuts and studio sales to follow.
  3. Platform pivot. Management leans harder into "Xbox everywhere," with PC, cloud and other platforms, and plays down console hardware. Our read: that would fit the Fortune report of a costly Helix launching late,[16] but it's speculation until Microsoft says so.

Leadership is still moving. Helen Chiang was named Xbox's first COO in the July reset.[8] Polygon reported on October 24 that she is leaving after about three months. Sharma told staff Xbox will "share more on COO leadership as plans are finalized," and a Microsoft spokesperson said, "We don't discuss individual personal matters."[17] Sony follows with its own results on November 5,[21] which gives a direct read on whether PlayStation is winning the console units Xbox is losing. See our PlayStation discs breakdown for Sony's digital shift.

FAQ

When does Microsoft report earnings?

Wednesday, October 28, 2026, after the US market closes, with a webcast at 2:30 p.m. PT (5:30 p.m. ET). It covers fiscal Q1 2027, July through September 2026.

What did Microsoft forecast for Xbox this quarter?

Microsoft guided Xbox content and services revenue to decline in the mid-single digits year over year, and Xbox hardware revenue to decline. In September it said there was no change to that outlook.

How much revenue did Xbox make last year?

Microsoft's restated XBOX revenue for fiscal 2026 (July 2025 to June 2026) was $21.79 billion, down from $23.455 billion the year before, a 7.1% drop.

What is the year-ago number Xbox is compared against?

$5,508 million in XBOX revenue for the July to September 2025 quarter, per Microsoft's restated figures.

Does Microsoft report Xbox profit?

No. Microsoft reports Xbox content and services and Xbox hardware revenue growth, not Xbox-only profit. From fiscal 2027, Xbox sits inside Microsoft's new Devices and Consumer segment.

Are Gears of War: E-Day and Modern Warfare 4 in these results?

No. Gears launched October 6 and Modern Warfare 4 on October 23, both after the September 30 quarter end. They fall in the December quarter, so watch Microsoft's outlook for that period.

Is Modern Warfare 4 on Game Pass?

Not at launch. Since April 2026, new Call of Duty games join Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass during the following holiday season, about a year after release. Modern Warfare 4 launched October 23 as a standalone release.

Will Xbox return to growth?

Microsoft says it expects to in fiscal 2027, which ends June 30, 2027. Xbox CEO Asha Sharma said by the end of FY27. Its guidance for the first quarter of that year is still a decline.

Will Microsoft talk about Project Helix on the call?

Possibly not. Microsoft hasn't announced a Helix price or date, and Fortune's report of a holiday 2028 launch at a $1,200 to $1,800 internal cost hasn't been confirmed.
