Mechanics

What players and creators actually get. Roblox's Q3 letter and its September developer conference describe a platform being rebuilt around three ideas: make games faster with AI, let people play them anywhere, and widen the kinds of games Roblox can run.[1][6]

  • Build, prompt-to-game on a phone. Build is a tab in the Roblox app that makes a game from text prompts. Roblox says more than 500,000 people used it in its alpha in New Zealand, Singapore, Serbia and Thailand, publishing more than 70,000 games, and over 75% of them had never used Roblox Studio. It plans a broader rollout "later this year," with a free tier and paid tiers for more prompts.[1]
  • AI is already in the hit games. Over the past month, more than 80% of the top 100 games by hours used AI tools, and daily asset uploads to Roblox's cloud tripled month over month. Two games made "almost entirely with AI," Break and Steal an Egg and Huss Valley, reached the top 20 by concurrent players.[1]
  • Play without the app. Roblox says players will be able to join games in Chrome by the end of 2026 with no install, and creators can add offline solo play, fully available by mid-2027.[6]
  • New genres. New 2D tools (an orthographic camera and sprite-sheet import) and turn notifications for asynchronous games push Roblox beyond its 3D multiplayer roots. Server Authority, shipped this quarter, is aimed at competitive games.[1][6]
  • Roblox Everywhere. Creators will be able to self-publish standalone games built on Roblox to the app store of their choice. The first phase, publishing select top games, is expected in the first half of 2027.[1]

Tech

The Universal Player. Roblox's letter calls it "an expanded vision of our platform" that "includes the goal of enabling the capability to import any existing console, PC, or mobile game onto Roblox," supported by AI and engine work. The idea is that imported games would run multiplayer on any device, with instant join and access to Roblox's discovery, safety and payment services.[1] On the earnings call, CEO David Baszucki described an AI-supported system to "import literally any existing PC, console, or mobile game directly onto the platform," after which games get what he calls "Robloxification": the social, discovery and monetization features of the platform.[3] It's a stated goal, not a shipped product, and Roblox gave no date for it.

Roblox Reality. This combines Roblox's engine and cloud with video world models to render photorealistic visuals in multiplayer games, using 20 years of gameplay data. Roblox plans early access in the first half of 2027.[1]

AI is getting expensive. Infrastructure and trust and safety costs rose 24% to $258 million, which Roblox ties to AI training and inference. It runs a hybrid of its own data centers plus public cloud "bursting" and routes each AI workload to the cheapest layer. About $380 million of capital spending is now expected in Q4, partly shifted from Q3.[1]

Our read: importing a console game onto a platform built for phones is the hardest promise here. Scaling art, controls and performance down to a cheap phone is a real technical problem, and rights to commercial games belong to their publishers. Treat the Universal Player as a direction until Roblox shows a working import of a known game.

Business

The quarter in numbers (Roblox's figures).[1]

  • Revenue was $1,572 million, up 16% from $1,360 million. Bookings, the cash players spend on Robux in the quarter, fell 12% to $1,697 million. Revenue still grew because most bookings are recognized over the 27-month average lifetime of a paying user.
  • Daily active users fell 9% to 138 million and hours fell 15% to nearly 34 billion. Both rose from Q2 (users up 12%, hours up 17%) and are up 55% and 63% over two years.
  • Monthly unique payers fell 16% to 30 million, while bookings per payer rose 5%. GamesIndustry.biz puts average bookings per daily user down 3% to $12.29.[5] The 10-Q shows about 1.8 million average daily payers, which is about 1.3% of daily users by our math.[2]
  • Creators earned $403 million in DevEx payouts, down 6%. Net loss was $230 million, against $258 million a year earlier. Operating cash flow was $395 million and free cash flow $364 million, with $6.2 billion in cash and investments.

Versus expectations. Investing.com reported that bookings of $1.70 billion beat the $1.63 billion estimate, but daily users of 138 million missed the 145.77 million expected and the Q4 bookings guide came in below the $2.01 billion consensus. The shares fell more than 17% in premarket trading on October 30.[4]

The Q4 guide. Roblox expects revenue of $1.47 billion to $1.58 billion (up 4% to 12%) and bookings of $1.89 billion to $2.00 billion (down 10% to 15%), with a net loss of $363 million to $423 million and negative free cash flow of $105 million to $190 million as capital spending lands.[1] CFO Naveen Chopra said "monetization headwinds did continue in the quarter, particularly with younger cohorts in the U.S.," and that the guide does "build in a modest headwind from the release of GTA in the quarter, though candidly, we have limited data from which to size any potential impact."[3] Our GTA 6 breakdown covers the November 19 launch.

New money. Roblox Plus, launched in April, has "millions of active subscribers," who average twice the playtime and spend 7x more Robux than non-subscribers. More than 70% of the top 100 games by Robux spent ran Sponsored Ads, and Roblox plans skippable pre-roll video ads.[1]

Our read: the 2025 boom made this year's comparisons brutal, and the two-year numbers show a much bigger platform than in 2024. But the mix is shifting. Payers are fewer and spend more, and the lever Roblox is pulling is older, wealthier players rather than more kids.

Player impact

  • Adults are the target. Roblox says US over-18 users monetize more than 50% above under-18s. It has raised the DevEx rate for in-game spending by US adults, nearly tripled paid acquisition aimed at adults, and tuned discovery by age group. US daily users aged 18 to 34 grew 26%.[1] Expect more deeper, longer-lasting games on the front page, which Roblox says its discovery system now rewards over 28 days rather than one week.[6]
  • Age checks are now normal. 64% of global daily users are age-checked, according to the letter.[1] Some features vary by age and region.[6]
  • For parents, the legal picture. Roblox's 10-Q says that as of October 29 it had settled with Alabama, Mississippi, Nevada, South Dakota, West Virginia and Kansas, and is negotiating with other states. It accrued $49 million in Q3 and $140 million over nine months for these matters. In October 2026, the FTC, Pennsylvania and Utah told Roblox they are considering claims under the FTC Act, the children's privacy law COPPA and state laws. Roblox also signed an enforceable undertaking with Australia's eSafety Commissioner in August.[2] No FTC case has been filed.
  • More ads. Skippable pre-roll video ads are planned, on top of sponsored placements and rewarded video.[1]
  • For creators. Discovery is shifting fast: about 40% of the weekly Recommended for You top 100 were made in the last three months, and Build means a lot more competition.[1] Payouts fell 6% this quarter.[1]

Long-term outlook

Roblox's goal is 10% of the global gaming market, and "an even greater share in the U.S."[1] In the US it already reaches about 20% of the under-18 gaming market and about 30% of 13- to 17-year-olds daily, but fewer than 2% of people outside the US use it daily. Growth this quarter came from places like Japan (+33%), India (+37%) and Saudi Arabia (+30%).[1]

The pitch to the industry. GamesIndustry.biz quotes Baszucki: "AI is fundamentally reshaping the gaming industry" and "When anyone can create a game, what matters most is scaled distribution."[5] That's the logic behind Everywhere and the Universal Player. If AI makes games cheap to build, the scarce thing is an audience plus payments and safety, and Roblox wants to sell that to everyone, including games made elsewhere.

Our read: this is Roblox pitching itself as a distribution platform, closer to an app store or Steam than a single game. It's a strategy for a future where AI floods every store with games, and it makes Roblox a rival to the console makers for players' time. Compare Xbox's September quarter, where Game Pass and third-party sales shrank, and Monster Hunter Outlanders, a traditional publisher taking a console series to phones. The risk is that the AI bill keeps rising faster than bookings, as the Q4 cash guide shows, while the younger US audience that built Roblox keeps spending less.
