Mechanics

What Sony reports, and when. Sony Group's investor relations calendar lists its fiscal 2026 second-quarter results for Thursday, November 5, with CFO Lin Tao presenting at 4:30 PM Japan time, 2:30 AM ET in the US.[1] The quarter runs July 1 to September 30, 2026. PlayStation sits in the Game & Network Services (G&NS) segment, which covers PS5 hardware, first- and third-party software, add-on content, PlayStation Plus and Sony's studios.[2]

What to look for in the release:

  • G&NS sales and operating income against last year's ¥1,113.2 billion and ¥120.4 billion.[5]
  • PS5 units shipped against 3.9 million a year ago, and the running total, which stood at 95.3 million on June 30.[6][4]
  • Monthly active users, 119 million a year ago, and 125 million in June.[6][4]
  • Software units, first-party units and digital share. A year ago that was 80.3 million units, 6.3 million first-party and 72% digital.[6]
  • The full-year G&NS forecast, now ¥4,540 billion in sales and ¥660 billion in operating income.[2]

Timing matters. This report stops on September 30. Phantom Blade Zero (October 29) and GTA 6 (November 19) fall in the October to December quarter, so they can only show up in Sony's forecast and commentary, not in the numbers.[13]

Tech

Memory is the hardware story. In July, Sony said: "we have secured the quantity of memory necessary to meet our projected sales volume for FY26, and there is no change to our plan for hardware profitability for FY26 to remain similar to FY25."[2] On the call, Tao added that Sony is "closely monitoring PS5 hardware demand trends and the potential for securing additional memory."[3] That covers the year to March 2027. Reuters reported in July that Sony expects memory prices to stay high next year, and CLSA analyst Amit Garg said Sony "will lose substantial money selling PS5 hardware if current memory prices for future contracts are factored in," and "may choose to produce lower volumes next year."[11]

Next-generation spending is already in the numbers. Sony listed "investments for the next-generation platform" among the higher costs that offset the first quarter's profit gain.[2] It hasn't announced a successor to the PS5. Reuters says some observers expect one in late 2028.[11]

Discs. Sony will stop making game discs for new PlayStation releases from January 2028. On the July call it said "the digitalization of contents overall has been progressing," that it sees no negative business impact so far, and that "we don't feel that the disc is the factor to differentiate from the PC."[3] See our PlayStation discs breakdown.

Our read: the PS5 is about to have its biggest software launch, and its hardware costs are going up. Sony has said what this fiscal year looks like. Any comment about memory after March 2027 is the most important hardware signal on November 5.

Business

The first quarter (April to June). G&NS sales were essentially flat at ¥937.1 billion, helped by ¥81.7 billion of currency effects and held back by lower sales of third-party software and hardware. Operating income rose 37% to ¥202.0 billion. Sony credited US tariff refunds and currency effects, offset by higher costs, including next-generation platform investment and restructuring.[2] PS5 shipments fell to 1.6 million from 2.5 million.[4]

Tariff refunds. After the US Supreme Court struck down the 2025 tariffs, Sony expects about ¥80 billion in refunds across the group this fiscal year. About 70% arrived in the first quarter, and "most" went to the games business.[3][7] Our math: that's about ¥56 billion in the first quarter, so PlayStation's underlying first-quarter profit was meaningfully below ¥202 billion. Sony didn't give an exact split.

The full-year forecast. In July Sony raised G&NS to ¥4,540 billion in sales (from ¥4,420 billion) and ¥660 billion in operating income (from ¥600 billion), citing tariff refunds, currency and "improvement in costs." Last year was ¥4,685.7 billion and ¥463.3 billion. So Sony expects sales down about 3% and profit up about 42%.[2] After a ¥202 billion first quarter, it needs about ¥458 billion over the last three quarters, an average of about ¥153 billion each.

A soft-looking year-ago bar. Last year's Q2 profit of ¥120.4 billion included a ¥31.5 billion impairment on Bungie's Destiny 2 assets and an ¥18.3 billion charge for previously capitalized development costs. Without them, Sony said Q2 profit would have risen 23%.[5] Our math: that's about ¥170 billion underlying, the fairer bar for this quarter.

The mystery adjustment. Sony's July forecast would have been higher if not for the "impact of adjustments to the FY26 first-party title roadmap."[2] Game File and Insider Gaming read that as a delay or cancellation of a game or expansion out of the year to March 2027. Sony hasn't named it, and both Marvel's Wolverine and God of War Laufey (February 16, 2027) stayed on schedule.[7][8]

What Wall Street expects. Earnings Whispers puts consensus for the whole Sony group at $0.38 per US share on about $19.93 billion of revenue, which would be lower sales and higher profit than a year ago. It notes there's no fresh company guidance to measure that against, which puts extra weight on any update to Sony's full-year outlook.[12] Those are dollar figures for the US-listed shares, so currency moves can blur them.

Player impact

  • Marvel's Wolverine is the quarter's big first-party launch. Circana says it had "the highest launch month dollar sales for a Sony published game since February 2024's Helldivers II," and topped the US chart for September.[9] Alinea Analytics estimated 1.9 million copies in three days, but that's a third-party estimate.[10] Watch for whether Sony gives an official number.
  • PS5 demand is holding up despite the price. The base PS5 rose from $500 in early 2025 to $650 in April 2026.[7] Even so, Circana says US PS5 hardware dollar sales rose 43% year over year in September, and PlayStation hardware is up 22% for the year, while Switch 2 is down 14% and Xbox Series is down 27%.[9] See our console prices guide.
  • Another price change? Sony hasn't announced one. The memory comments are the thing to read for any sign of pressure on PS5 or PS5 Pro prices after March 2027.[2][11]
  • GTA 6. Kantan Games' Serkan Toto told Reuters "the vast majority of new users will choose a PlayStation 5" for GTA 6. Ampere's Piers Harding-Rolls said the game will soften this year's PS5 hardware decline, but that the PS5's price "is now higher than ideal with GTA VI coming to market."[11] See our GTA 6 console guide.
  • Tariff refunds and players. Game File reports that PlayStation buyers' class actions asking for tariff refunds to be passed on have been consolidated into one case.[7] Sony hasn't said it will pass any refund to players.

Long-term outlook

The holiday quarter is the real test. October to December brings Phantom Blade Zero, a PS5 console exclusive that S-GAME says sold over 4 million copies across PS5 and PC in 72 hours,[13] and GTA 6, which PlayStation is promoting as playing best on PS5. In July Sony told investors that "many major titles are scheduled to be released toward the end of calendar year" and that it expects engagement to improve.[3]

100 million PS5s. Sony had shipped 95.3 million by June 30.[4] Our math: passing 100 million in this report would need about 4.7 million units in one quarter, more than the 3.9 million of a year ago.[6] The milestone looks more likely in the GTA 6 holiday quarter.

The rivals. Microsoft just reported Xbox hardware revenue down 14% (see our Xbox results breakdown), and Nintendo reports the same day (our Nintendo preview). Reuters calls Sony "widely seen as the winner of the high-end console wars as Microsoft's Xbox business retrenches."[11]

Our read: PlayStation is set up for a record profit year, but a lot of that comes from one-time tariff refunds and currency. The bigger long-term question is cost. Memory prices, next-generation spending and a first-party slate that already slipped once will decide whether this is a peak or a new base.
